Lieh-Shan Yen was born to the Burning Mountain Clan, a group of skilled manipulators of fire. On the night of his birth, the seven stars of the southern skies aligned to produce the symbol of the Vermilion Bird, a sign that a divine warrior had descended to earth. From a young age, he was a diligent scholar who refused to let anyone best him, convinced that the burden of cleansing evil from the world rested upon his shoulders.
In his youth, Lieh-Shan Yen heard tales of the mythical lance, the Scarlet Flame. He ventured alone into the Scarlet Abyss, conquering many dangers to tame the weapon that none could wield. The moment the lance submitted to his will, a glyph symbolizing fire appeared upon his forehead, and its blade burned with gold and scarlet fire. From that moment on, he became its wielder.
During the Sunset of the Gods, Lieh-Shan Yen led his army into battle against the Shadow Dragon. To activate the Scarlet Flame's ultimate power, he resolved to sacrifice himself along with his men, and succeeded in setting the dragon's wings ablaze. Lieh-Shan Yen survived the ordeal, but his many thousands of troops did not. The Grand Arbiter had once prophesied that "countless lives would achieve a feat that would shake the earth". Now it had come grimly true.
After being sealed away in the Dragon's Breath Gourd for over a thousand years, Lieh-Shan Yen was awoken in the year 1198 to fight the Darklings. He looked just as young as he had when he first wielded the Scarlet Flame, but remained a controversial figure. Now, he leads a new army to battle. He refuses to sacrifice them once more to gain victory—but as the war grows ever more destructive, will his resolve be tested?
