Ruby clutched at her empty stomach as the crowd swelled around her. "Lemon cakes..." she mumbled. "Lemon cakes from the palace..." Her mother promised she'd bring some back with her. The jostling, jeering crowd had backed her into a corner. The flames in her palm flickered and shot toward the Honor Guard of the Royal Court just feet away from her... Moments later, the soldiers had forced her in front of the carriage. The curtains parted, and a red-haired main regarded her with a smile. "My, such a pretty little jewel," he said. "How would you like to come home with me?"
Ruby had taken to calling the red-haired man "Mr. Nice Guy". He would often tell her that "jewels need time to grow into their beauty." But before she could "grow into her beauty", "Mr. Nice Guy" had met his end on the executioner's block. At the trial, they had called him "Eyecatcher", and ordered the red-haired House Riven banished forever from Tamaris. The "Eyecatcher" had slaughtered dozens of young women, and was to pay the ultimate price...
The court brought forth the Eyecatcher's collection. In each glass jar floated a pair of beautiful eyes—or, as he had called them, "beautiful jewels". Upon each jar was affixed the name of their former owner. Ruby fought her way to the front. In one jar, she saw a pair of bright green eyes, the exact same color as hers, yet slightly unfamiliar... until she saw the name on the jar. "Annie." Ruby finally realized where her mother had been these past three years.
"Annie... Annie!" Ruby had carved the same name upon both of her cannons. "Who's Annie?" "Oh, my mama." "Your mama?" "Right. She got killed by some degenerate. He took a liking to her eyes. Then he took a liking to mine, but I got lucky. So now I want to share that luck with her. Since you want to be nosy, how's about giving me your name?" "My name? It's... Martin." "Sure thing, George. See, these two cannons are mine and Annie's luck. Now I want to test that luck. So thanks, George. See you later, George..." Boom. Boom boom boom boom.
