Velyn was born with a natural affinity to ice, and as a child, would imagine that the falling snowflakes were his friends—or his subjects. In ice, he saw order, and in the beautiful symmetry of its crystals and branches, he found his deepest joy.

As a young man, Velyn had a deep interest in magic—particularly arcane magic, with its interconnecting concepts and intricate procedures. He began studying under the mage Hedwyn, who shared Velyn's thirst for knowledge and obsession with the arcane, and soon became his greatest pupil.
Chapter 3 Trust Level 6
Velyn looked down arrogantly upon the scholars who studied primal magic—though a gift from nature, he thought it fickle, crude, and disorderly. At the same time, he also disdained his fellow arcane scholars, considering them conservative and rule-bound dullards who squandered the glory of the arcane. Yet none could deny that his talent and skill had few equals.

When he discovered that Hedwyn was attempting to bring his son—who had sacrificed himself in battle—back from the dead through Necromancy, Velyn had no choice but to challenge his old master to a duel. His reasoning was simple: Hedwyn had sullied the beauty of the arcane. The Vale Society had Velyn imprisoned for his vigilante justice. But on the Night of Burning Stars, he appeared once more to defend the scholars of the Society.
